The Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) has confirmed a rabies outbreak in the Ajah area of Lagos State. The outbreak was verified through laboratory testing by the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI) in Vom, Plateau State.
Dr. Ofua Mark, Chairman of the NVMA, issued a public health advisory, attributing the outbreak to the increasing number of unlicensed individuals posing as veterinarians and administering vaccines without proper supervision.
Dr. Mark expressed concern over the misuse of rabies vaccines, emphasising that improper handling poses a serious public health risk. He condemned the practice of dog breeders self-administering vaccines without veterinary oversight, warning that such recklessness endangers community safety. The NVMA has notified key regulatory agencies, including the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), to address the situation.
The Lagos State government has implemented containment measures, including contact tracing, isolation of suspected cases, and heightened surveillance in the Ajah-Lekki corridor.
Rabies, a deadly but preventable viral disease, is primarily transmitted through the bites of infected animals, particularly dogs. The NVMA has urged residents in affected areas to remain vigilant, ensure their pets are vaccinated by licensed professionals, and report any animal bites or unusual pet behaviour immediately.
Dr. Mark advised residents to avoid stray animals and seek prompt medical attention if bitten, stressing that timely intervention is critical. He also called for stricter enforcement of veterinary regulations to eliminate unqualified practitioners whose actions threaten both human and animal health.
The NVMA has pledged to collaborate with state and federal health agencies to monitor the outbreak, provide updates, and enhance public awareness. Residents were encouraged to report incidents to the Lagos NVMA or accredited veterinary clinics. Dr. Mark reiterated that with collective responsibility and adherence to professional veterinary care, Lagos can achieve a rabies-free environment.
