German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has reaffirmed Europe’s commitment to cooperation with the United States but warned that the European Union would respond collectively if Washington imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum.
Speaking at the opening of the Hanover Industrial Trade Fair on Sunday, where Canada was the featured partner country, Scholz also addressed recent remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump had previously speculated about annexing Canada and referred to it as the 51st U.S. state.
“We stand by your side. Canada is not a state that belongs to anyone else. Canada is a proud, independent nation,” Scholz declared, emphasizing the country’s sovereignty.
Responding to Trump’s protectionist trade stance, the German leader argued for more free trade, greater competitiveness, and increased technological sovereignty. He stressed that Europe would not be naive in the face of economic threats.
“Trade wars harm everyone. Our goal remains cooperation with the United States. But if the U.S. leaves us no choice, such as with tariffs on steel and aluminum, we, as the EU, will react as one,” Scholz warned.
