Afrobeat musician and Grammy nominee Seun Kuti has strongly criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, claiming that his only notable “achievement” since taking office has been shielding political elites from accountability for their alleged crimes.
According to Kuti, many of the president’s harsh economic policies, which have worsened the financial struggles of ordinary Nigerians, were primarily designed to protect the wealthy and powerful from facing justice.
Seun Kuti also aimed the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, referencing his recent monthly media chat. He claimed that Wike’s main concern during the discussion was the opposition coalition’s attempt to disrupt the political status quo.
Kuti suggested that Wike was angered by the opposition’s actions, viewing them as ungrateful despite Tinubu’s efforts to safeguard the interests of the political class.
In a video broadcast, Kuti highlighted Wike’s remarks about former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, where Wike alleged that Amaechi’s wife received N4 billion monthly during her husband’s tenure.
Kuti expressed disappointment that Wike did not specify the duration of these payments, implying deeper corruption within the political system.
Kuti argued that Wike and other Tinubu supporters are primarily concerned with preserving the existing power structure. He interpreted Wike’s statements as a warning to opposition politicians, suggesting that Tinubu’s administration serves as a shield for the “rich, crooked, and corrupt Nigerian elites.”
According to Kuti, the president’s so-called tough decisions are merely tactics to conceal widespread wrongdoing.
“The only thing this president has done is cover up crimes upon crimes,” Kuti stated. “The bravery needed to do that is wickedness. He has impoverished the entire nation because crime involves taking something, and in this case, it’s the people’s welfare and justice.”
Seun Kuti urged Nigerians to recognise that the government’s policies are not in the public’s interest but rather a means to protect the political elite from consequences.
