Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State recently announced that his government is already working with surrounding states and the Republic of Cameroon to build a single front to address security challenges plaguing the states.
The governor, who made the statement on Tuesday while hosting the Commander of Army Operation Whirl Stroke, General L.G Laptang, in Jalingo, also condemned the calls for state police.
Agbu opposed the creation of state police in any area of the country, stating that the present security apparatus is adequate of tackling the nation’s current security concerns.
Kefas, who walked his visitors down memory lane, stated that as a former military man, he is certain that the military and other security personnel in the country are capable of addressing the country’s security concerns.
Rather than pushing for state police, he proposed that greater resources be put in the army and other security forces to ensure that they perform properly.
He said:
“After serving in the Nigerian army for some years, I know what the military and other security agencies of Nigeria are capable of doing for national security.”
Highlighting how his administration has been making ways to collaborate with governors of the neighbouring states and a governor in Cameroon, to surmount the security challenges confronting the state, he said proper collaboration would make insecurity a thing of the past.
“We can synergise to tackle insecurity at our borders, the criminals must be fished out for the law-abiding citizens to live in peace.
“I know that you are a great asset to Nigeria but what you need is the necessary support and enabling environment to discharge your duties.”
