Taraba varsity lecturers threaten strike over unpaid allowances, breached agreement

Academic staff at Taraba State University have issued a fresh strike warning to the state government over alleged failure to implement key terms of a January 2025 agreement.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter at the institution accused Governor Agbu Kefas’ administration of reneging on the Memorandum of Action that had led to the suspension of their industrial action in February.

At a press briefing in Jalingo on Tuesday, ASUU Chairman Dr. Joshua Mbave Garba revealed the government had failed to commence the monthly N50 million payment for Earned Academic Allowances as agreed.

He described the situation as “a deliberate provocation” after months of patience from lecturers who continued working under difficult conditions.

The union also highlighted unresolved issues, including chronic underfunding of the university, non-implementation of a staff pension scheme, and the government’s failure to convene scheduled stakeholders’ meetings to address salary arrears.

A two-week ultimatum issued in July expired without response, which the union called “deafening and unacceptable silence.”

While acknowledging the governor’s free education policy, ASUU stressed that staff welfare cannot be sacrificed.

“We are nation builders, not saboteurs,” Dr. Mbave stated, adding that the union has resolved to resume its suspended strike if the government fails to urgently address their grievances.

The threatened industrial action comes as the new academic session approaches, potentially disrupting academic activities if last-minute resolutions are not reached between both parties.
