The extensive repair work on the Third Mainland Bridge is expected to cost N21 billion, according to Senator David Umahi, Minister of Works.
Umahi spoke at the flag-off ceremony for the bridge, alongside Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr Obafemi Hamzat.
The cost, according to the Minister, is due to an expansion of the scope of work, which includes the complete replacement of the asphalt deck to the standard two inches to make driving on the bridge smoother and safer.
He hinted that a special feature agreed upon with the Lagos State government was the installation of spikes on the guard railings to discourage suicide attempts on the bridge.
The Minister stated that the four ramp repairs will be completed by December 13. In addition, a break will be observed for the Christmas and New Year holidays, and the carriageway maintenance will commence January 15.
Dr. Hamzat, on his part, urged Lagos residents to be patient with the minor inconvenience that bridge repairs would cause, assuring them that it was necessary for the public’s overall good.
