President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, recognising his crucial role in Nigeria’s democratic journey and his support during the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking at the 8th Day Fidau prayer held at the Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, President Tinubu recounted how the revered monarch’s blessing and encouragement significantly contributed to his electoral victory.

The solemn event attracted prominent political figures, including Governors Abiodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), and Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), alongside former governors, federal lawmakers, and traditional rulers.

President Tinubu highlighted the late Awujale’s unwavering commitment to democratic ideals, particularly during the June 12, 1993, presidential election crisis when he stood firmly in support of the revalidation of Chief MKO Abiola’s annulled mandate.

Describing Oba Adetona as “a pride to Yoruba land,” President Tinubu praised the monarch’s honesty, courage, and steadfastness in championing just causes. He emphasised that Yoruba history would remain incomplete without acknowledging the Awujale’s immense contributions, noting how the traditional ruler brought dignity to the race during his remarkable 64-year reign.

The President commended Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for his care towards the late monarch and urged Nigerians to preserve the Awujale’s legacy of unity and progress.

Governor Abiodun, in his remarks, celebrated the departed monarch as a moral compass and a catalyst for development who transformed Ijebuland while fostering religious harmony.

He recalled the Awujale’s advocacy for the less privileged and his role as a mentor to countless individuals, urging citizens to emulate the late ruler’s virtues of peace and unity for continued societal advancement. The gathering served as both a solemn farewell and a celebration of a life that profoundly shaped Nigeria’s traditional and political landscape.
