U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed relocating Palestinians from Gaza to neighboring countries such as Jordan and Egypt, amid ongoing conflict in the war-torn enclave.
The suggestion, however, has been met with widespread rejection.
Hamas, the militant group governing Gaza, dismissed the idea outright. “The people of Gaza have endured death and refused to leave their homeland. They will not leave it under any circumstances,” Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri said.
Egypt and Jordan, already hosting millions of Palestinians, have also categorically refused the proposal, emphasizing their opposition to any displacement of Palestinians, whether temporary or permanent. Egypt’s foreign ministry issued a strong statement rejecting the suggestion.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich endorsed Trump’s idea, calling it “excellent” and expressing a desire to develop a plan to facilitate it.
However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has consistently rejected such notions, aligning himself against the call for relocating Palestinians.
Trump’s proposal comes as Gaza faces a dire humanitarian crisis, with tens of thousands killed and severe shortages of essential supplies.
While Trump suggested the relocation could be temporary or long-term, Palestinian leaders fear it could lead to permanent displacement, echoing long-standing concerns about losing their homeland.
