The United Nations (UN) launched a campaign on Wednesday, 5 July 2023, to gather support for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals are the blueprint for people and the planet approved by world leaders in 2015.
The Media Officer of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), Dr Olueyi Soremekun, published a statement in line with it. In it, the public mobilisation comes ahead of the critical halftime Summit in September at the UN in New York. The campaign aims to underscore an urgent appeal for bold new action. It highlights the Goals as the blueprint for global sustainable progress. It also rallies the international public around this shared agenda for our common future.
The SDGs’ promise is jeopardised as we approach the deadline of 2030.
The combined consequences of climatic catastrophes, conflict, economic slump, and lasting COVID-19 effects are reversing development gains for the first time in decades, according to the statement.
On the 18th and 19th of September, world leaders will assemble at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Furthermore, they will reaffirm their joint commitment to the Goals and the resolve to leave no one behind. This Summit represents a watershed moment for the world to get back on track towards attaining the SDGs.
Starting today, the UN campaign intends to re-energize the discourse about the Goals. Particularly with significant digital action across platforms and nations throughout the world.
Nanette Braun, Director of Campaigns at the UN Department of Global Communications said-
“We want everyone on board for the SDGs,”
In response, Matthias Schmale, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, stated-
Our hope is that decision-makers and individual citizens alike will feel inspired to join the conversation and contribute to achieving the Goals with new resolve and ambition.”
The campaign employs a dynamic new visual system for its messaging to generate momentum, raise awareness, and mobilise rapid action for the SDGs, based on the colour wheel brand of the SDGs.
A key campaign component is a call to individuals to take action on the SDGs through the UN’s ActNow programme across all 17 Goals.
