Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in the United Kingdom to oversee the repatriation of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s remains to Nigeria for burial.
According to a statement by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima departed Nigeria shortly after midnight on Sunday and was received in London by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar.
The solemn mission was also witnessed by Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum and the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, who joined the Vice President early Monday morning. Buhari, who passed away on Sunday after a prolonged illness, had been receiving medical treatment in the UK for years, even during his two-term presidency.
The former leader’s body is expected to arrive in Nigeria later today, where he will be laid to rest in accordance with Islamic traditions.
While the exact nature of his illness was never publicly disclosed, Buhari’s health struggles were a recurring topic throughout his presidency.
His death has drawn an outpouring of tributes from across Nigeria and beyond, with many acknowledging his service to the nation as both a military leader and a democratically elected president.
The federal government has declared a period of national mourning, with flags flown at half-mast and a state funeral expected to be held in Buhari’s honour. Further details regarding the burial arrangements will be announced in the coming days.
