On Wednesday, May 28, 2025, secondary school students across Lagos were forced to endure extraordinary conditions while writing the English Language paper of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Originally scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM, the exam was delayed by several hours at many centres due to logistical complications, eventually stretching into the night.
The delay was reportedly caused by the sudden withdrawal and replacement of the English Language paper by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), following concerns over a possible leak.
This led to the reprinting and redistribution of new papers nationwide, severely affecting the exam schedule.
In some schools, such as Birrel Avenue Senior High School in Sabo-Yaba, Eva Adelaja Senior Girls Secondary School in Bariga, and Oke-Ira Senior Grammar School in Ogba, students did not begin the exam until late in the night.
In extreme cases, like at Eva Adelaja in Bariga, students were still writing under torchlight as late as 11:45 PM.
Parents expressed outrage at the situation. One mother, Fausat Olaniyi, who waited at the Bariga centre, lamented, “My daughter didn’t finish until almost midnight. No proper explanation, no apology—just stress and confusion. This is inhuman.”
Similar incidents were reported in other states, including Ogun, Oyo, Osun, and Benue. WAEC, through its Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, later issued an apology to students and Nigerians, acknowledging the disruptions.
