Oladitan Olufunmilayo, a 32-year-old woman was sentenced to 15 years in prison in a federal court in Lagos on Tuesday for dealing in illegal drugs.
Judge Daniel Osiagor has sentenced Olufunmilayo to prison after convicting her of five counts of trafficking. All of these are prohibited drugs by National Drug Law Enforcement Agencies (NDLEA).
NDLEA Prosecutor Augustine Nuwag said on November 3, 2022, the convict was found to be in possession of banned drugs. She was found at Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc Export Shed at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Ikeja, Lagos. The incident happened during an examination and clearing of cargo to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
He said drugs found on Olufunmilayo when she was arrested included 7 grams of cocaine. 11 grams methamphetamine; 52 grams Cannabis Sativa; 47 grams tramadol 225 mg and 106 grams Rohypnol.
Prosecutor said the crimes committed violated Sections 11(b) and 20(1)(a) of the NDLEA Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. They are also punishable under Section 20(2)(a) of the same Act.
Earlier, when convicted, she pleaded guilty but her counsel, Dennis Warri asked the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing her under the terms of the law against which she was charged.
But her attorney, Denis Wali, appealed to the court to soften justice by mercy by convicting her. He further added that his client was a first-time offender.
The Judge sentenced Olufunmilayo to three years imprisonment for each of the counts with an option of N350,000.
However, the judge ordered that the prison sentence be served at the same time.
