Bayer Leverkusen’s head coach, Xabi Alonso, has officially announced that Victor Boniface will not participate in the upcoming Saturday fixture against Hoffenheim. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Alonso clarified that Boniface is set to rejoin the squad for the Wednesday encounter against Fortuna Düsseldorf.
Boniface’s absence stemmed from a groin injury sustained during the Super Eagles’ camp ahead of the 2023 AFCON. However, his impending return serves as a significant morale boost for Leverkusen, who are poised to clinch their maiden Bundesliga title. The 23-year-old striker has showcased impressive form, tallying 10 goals in just 16 league appearances under Alonso’s guidance.
Furthermore, Boniface’s return holds positive implications for the Nigerian national team, as they gear up for the resumption of 2026 World Cup qualifiers, slated to commence in June against South Africa.
Leverkusen currently dominates the Bundesliga standings with 70 points, enjoying a comfortable 10-point lead over Bayern Munich. As Boniface prepares to rejoin the fray, Leverkusen anticipates his impact in their quest for domestic glory and Nigerian football fans eagerly await his contributions on the international stage.
