The residents of Moriki town in Zamfara State’s Zurmi LGA were successful in persuading a bandit leader, Bello Turji, to decrease the ransom he placed on them from N50 million to N30 million, with a payment deadline of Wednesday.
According to reports, the payment is intended to compensate Turji for the death of his cows by the new commander of the Army installation stationed inside Moriki.
Each household head is obliged to give N10,000, with unmarried persons paying N2,000.
It was also discovered that the villagers are going with the payment despite the commander’s admonition not to pay the money and his vow never to hurt Turji’s animals again.
The villagers are afraid that if they fail to pay the demand, Turji will launch additional terror assaults on them, with no one to defend them from his violence.
According to reports, Turji is still holding about fifteen local politicians and social activists prisoner.
They were kidnapped from Moriki although troops were stationed there.
