Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Tuesday that he had postponed his planned visit to Saudi Arabia, which was set for Wednesday.
He explained that any discussions on ending the war with Russia could not take place without Ukraine’s involvement.
Reports indicated that Ukraine was not represented at the talks between the United States and Russia in Riyadh on Tuesday. Zelenskiy clarified that Kyiv had not been invited to the meeting but had initially planned to attend.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to Turkey, where he met with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, Zelenskiy emphasized, “We want no one to decide anything behind our backs… No decision can be made about ending the war in Ukraine without Ukraine.”
Zelenskiy confirmed he had postponed his trip to Riyadh until March 10, stressing that he wanted to avoid any potential misunderstandings.
As the war approaches its third anniversary next week, Zelenskiy noted that neither Ukraine nor Russia could achieve victory on the battlefield, with fierce fighting continuing along the more than 1,000 km frontline, particularly in the eastern Donetsk region, where Russian forces have been making gradual advances.
He also highlighted Ukraine’s surprise attack in August 2024, which resulted in Kyiv seizing a small part of Russia’s Kursk region.
Zelenskiy reiterated that, for a just peace, the United States, Ukraine, and Europe must be included in any discussions on security guarantees for Ukraine.
At a joint news conference, Erdogan affirmed Turkey’s stance, stating that Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty were non-negotiable.
He also expressed that Turkey would be an ideal location for any future peace talks involving Russia.
