Victor Osimhen of the Super Eagles and Napoli, and Asisat Oshoala of the Super Falcons, have been named the 2023 CAF African Player of the Year.
Osimhen is the first Nigerian to win the prestigious award since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999, while Asisat Oshoala has earned her sixth African Women’s Player of the Year Award.
The 24-year-old triumphed against Liverpool and Egypt’s Mohammed Salah, as well as PSG and Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi.
Osimhen had an outstanding 2022/2023 season, assisting the Partonopei to their first Serie A title in over three decades.
He won the Golden Boot and was named Serie A Player of the Season after scoring 26 league goals and 31 overall.
Osimhen also broke numerous records, including one held by Liberia’s President George Weah, to become the African with the most goals in Italy’s top flight.
Asisat Oshoala, who plays club football for Barcelona, won the title ahead of South Africa’s Thembi Klagtlana and Zambia’s Barbara Banda.
Last season, the 27-year-old was instrumental in Barcelona Femeni’s UEFA Women’s Champions League victory.
The Barcelona Femeni star is the first woman to win the accolade six times in a row.
Recall, Asisat Oshoala and Victor Osimhen were both nominated for the 2023 Ballon d’Or, finishing in the top 20 and top ten in the Women and Men categories, respectively.
Also, Chiamaka Nnadozie has been named the CAF Women’s Keeper of the Year for 2023.
Nnadozie won the title against Moroccan shot-stopper Khadija El-Rmichi and South African Andile Olaminii.
The Super Falcons custodian was spectacular for Nigeria at the Women’s World Cup, making three saves against Olympic winners Canada, including a 50th-minute penalty save against Christine Sinclair.
