Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, Special Adviser on Political Matters to Vice President Kashim Shettima, has advised former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso not to contest the 2027 presidential election.
He said both men should step aside to allow younger and more unifying leaders to emerge, arguing that their participation could weaken efforts to build a stronger political alternative.
Speaking in an interview on Monday, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed said that although Obi and Kwankwaso have significant followings, their ambitions may hinder the formation of a united political front that could challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He noted that neither of the two leaders had successfully built a national consensus or formed coalitions broad enough to win the presidency in 2023, and he questioned the value of repeating the same strategy in 2027.
According to him, the country needs fresh leadership with the ability to unite people across religious, ethnic, and regional lines.
He also emphasised the importance of political maturity and selflessness, urging both men to support others who may be better positioned to galvanise widespread support and offer a credible alternative.
Hakeem Baba-Ahmed stressed that opposition movements must prioritise national interest over personal ambition. He added that the political landscape ahead of 2027 should be shaped by leaders who can offer new ideas and genuine hope to Nigerians.
His remarks have sparked mixed reactions, with some Nigerians agreeing with the call for new faces, while others believe Obi and Kwankwaso still have the political clout and moral authority to contest again.
