‘Free VeryDarkMan’ protest rocks Abuja

A protest calling for the release of social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, took place in Abuja on Monday, drawing the attention of security agencies, civil society groups, and online supporters.

The protesters gathered in front of the Federal High Court to demand the immediate release of the controversial figure, who has been in detention for several days.

Chanting solidarity songs and holding placards with messages such as “Justice for VeryDarkMan” and “Free VDM Now,” the protesters accused the authorities of using state power to silence critics.

They argued that the continued detention of VeryDarkMan, without clear charges or a public trial, undermines the fundamental rights to free speech and fair hearing as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.

The protest, which remained largely peaceful, briefly disrupted traffic along major roads near the court premises. A few scuffles broke out between demonstrators and security personnel, but no injuries or arrests were officially reported.

Some activists who spoke to journalists said the arrest was politically motivated and connected to the activists’ recent criticism of influential figures and government agencies on social media.

Several prominent voices on social media have also lent support to the call for his release, with hashtags such as #FreeVeryDarkMan trending on X (formerly Twitter) and other platforms.

They argue that his bold commentary, though controversial, reflects public concerns that should not be criminalised.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the reason for his detention. However, lawyers close to the case insist they will pursue legal options to secure his release, including filing for bail and a fundamental rights enforcement suit. Supporters say they will continue peaceful demonstrations until he is freed.
