Investigators have discovered the bodies of at least 28 migrants near a detention facility in the desert region of southern Libya, according to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The Libyan Attorney General’s Office uncovered the mass grave north of the city of Kufra, where dozens of migrants had been held. Authorities also confirmed that security forces rescued 76 migrants from the facility.
According to initial findings, a criminal gang is believed to have illegally detained the migrants, subjecting migrants to torture and inhumane treatment.
Kufra, located in a remote desert area near Libya’s borders with Egypt and Sudan, is a notorious hub for human trafficking. Libya, still reeling from years of civil war, remains a dangerous route for migrants seeking passage to Europe.
The Attorney General’s Office highlighted that armed groups—some with links to state agencies—run extensive human trafficking networks. These networks exploit migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, exposing them to extreme abuse.
Reports suggest widespread human rights violations, including unlawful killings, forced recruitment, forced labour, and human trafficking for sexual exploitation.
