Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) killed 118 people between last year and April 2nd, 2023, in 21 states across the country, according to the Nigeria Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).
In a situation report released on Saturday, the agency noted that in the 2022/2023 CSM seasons, they had registered 1,479 suspected cases by April 2.
The 22 states reporting suspected CSM cases in 2022/2023 include Abia, Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Ebonyi, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Oyo, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara.
According to the report, 93% of all cumulative cases came from five states: Jigawa state with 1,064 cases, 234 cases in Yobe state, Zamfara state with 36 cases, Bauchi states with 23 cases, and 21 cases in Adamawa.
Also, 14 local government areas in 4 states have reported more than 10 cases during the 2022-2023 CSM season, with 8 cases in Jigawa, Yobe 4, Bauchi and Zamfara, 1 Local government each.
It stated that males were 57 percent of the cases, while 43 percent were females.
The NCDC said Jigawa State had been in an outbreak since the Epidemic from week 40 of 2022, with 11 out of its 22 local government areas affected.
The NCDC said Yobe State, also in a suspected outbreak, is being supported to generate enough surveillance/laboratory data/evidence to request vaccines.
It said the national multi-sectoral Cerebrospinal Meningitis Technical Working Group (TWG) continued to monitor response across states.
