Twenty-two athletes represented their countries at the recently concluded African U-18 and U-20 Athletics Championships in Ndola, Zambia. The new generation of Nigerian athletes is on their way to stardom with academic and athletic scholarships at various American universities.

Delta Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa invited the players to dinner on Monday night to celebrate their championship achievements.

The Nigerian team shattered expectations with 17 gold, 9 silver and 7 bronze medals, finishing second behind South Africa, who had the highest number of medals.

Sports Minister, Sunday Dare, who spoke at the event was also pleased with the medal. He added that the athletes painted the future of Nigeria’s track and field.

In his words-

“I met them in Lagos when the team arrived from Zambia and we enjoyed ourselves. Thanks to the team for what they have done.

“These ones represent the future of our athletics. In three or four years, the likes of Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume would have reached their peak. With the crop that came from Ndola, we have hope.

“We have to put the group together and do the right things. We can do well at the African Games and Olympics.”

He also thanked Delta State for its contribution to sports in Nigeria.

“We have seen the contributions of states in the country. In our adopt an athlete programme, Delta supported 16 athletes and other states adopted just one or two athletes.”, he said.

Tonobok Okowa, the president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) praised Governor Okowa for his support during the team’s preparations and for welcoming them back as the host country. He added that AFN strives to help athletes reach greater heights.
