Gareth Southgate has named Trent Alexander-Arnold in his England squad for the first time since the World Cup.
Gareth Southgate has picked Reece James, Kyle Walker, and Kieran Trippier ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold in recent times. However, Trent has been called to the squad with Reece James out injured.
Jurgen Klopp has fit the Scouser into a midfield role during the last two months, and this has helped Liverpool go on a winning streak, although they still failed to snatch Champions League qualification.
Asked about Alexander-Arnold’s “slightly different role,” Southgate said: “His new role is something I’ve talked to him about in the last couple of weeks.”
Southgate has shown the desire to play the Liverpool defender in a midfield role, most notably in a failed experiment during a World Cup qualifier against Andorra nearly two years ago.
Gareth Southgate has also called up Jordan Henderson from Liverpool. Henderson will be available for the games against Malta and North Macedonia on June 16 and 19, respectively.
