A dormitory fire in Mahdia Secondary School, Guyana killed 19 children allegedly caused by an angry teenage girl whose mobile phone was taken away.
The fire was declared as “maliciously set” by the Guyana Fire and Rescue Service. The girl was suspected of starting the fire because the dorm mother and a teacher took away her cellphone.
The dormitory had been closed for illegal exits. The structure trapped the students inside, and firefighters found the building engulfed in flames upon arrival.
The house mother, who lost her child, was the sole survivor. Five doors were shut, and the building’s windows were severely barred.
