Milt Larsen, the visionary co-founder of Hollywood’s iconic Magic Castle, has left this world at the age of 92, leaving behind a profound legacy in the world of magic and entertainment.

The magician and TV writer, known for his work on the beloved game show “Truth or Consequences,” passed away in Los Angeles on Sunday, May 28, due to natural causes.

Chuck Martinez, chair of the board of directors for the Castle’s Academy of Magical Arts, expressed deep sorrow over Larsen’s demise, stating,

It is with heavy hearts that the Academy of Magical Arts shares the sad news that Magic Castle founder Milt Larsen has passed away. For decades, he brought magic to so many lives, and his legacy will continue to do so. We will miss him tremendously.”

Milt Larsen’s connection to the world of magic and his beloved city of Los Angeles ran deep. His father, William Larsen Sr., was a well-known local defense attorney and an accomplished magician, while his mother, Geraldine, gained early fame as “The Magic Lady” with appearances on television. Milt Larsen made significant contributions to the entertainment industry as a writer for TV game shows, notably “Truth or Consequences,” during Bob Barker’s illustrious 18-year tenure as host in the 1950s, ’60s, and early ’70s.

In the early 1960s, Larsen joined forces with his older brother, William Larsen Jr., and William’s wife, Irene, to embark on a transformative journey. They converted a Gothic renaissance mansion located on Franklin Avenue in the heart of Hollywood into a remarkable clubhouse catering to working magicians. The trio founded the Academy of Magical Arts, which soon became synonymous with the Magic Castle.

Since its opening in 1963, the Magic Castle has captivated audiences worldwide, solidifying its reputation as a premier destination for magic enthusiasts, despite enduring ups and downs over the past six decades. Last year, the Larsen family relinquished their lease of the property to videogame magnate Randy Pitchford, founder of Gearbox Entertainment.

Milt Larsen’s wife, Arlene Larsen, his nephew, Dante Larsen, and his niece, Erika Larsen, as well as great-nieces, Jessica Hopkins, and Liberty Larsen, survive him. The magic community mourns the loss of a visionary, and his indelible contributions to the art of magic and profound impact on the Magic Castle will be forever cherished and celebrated.
