Plastic Free Rainy Season Sensitization project, a non-governmental organization (NGO), revealed plans for a three-month citizen-led project to combat plastic pollution. In a statement, convener Ejike Nwankwo announced. That WAICA Reinsurance had supported the initiative as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility competition. The competition aims to encourage people to adopt small, everyday actions that prevent single-use plastics from ending up in landfills, lessen environmental pollution, and reduce the risk of urban flooding.

Nwankwo stated, “By participating in the Plafera Challenge, we will embrace simple, everyday actions that reduce our dependence on single-use plastics. While these actions may seem small individually, their collective impact is enormous. Together, we can keep single-use plastics out of landfills, prevent environmental pollution, and even mitigate the risk of urban flooding during the rainy season.

“The primary goal is to inspire people to adopt small, everyday actions that keep single-use plastics out of landfills, reduce environmental pollution, and mitigate the risk of urban flooding”.

He says this is “a remarkable opportunity to effect real change and demonstrate our commitment to sustainability.” Over 5,000 volunteers will collectively divert more than 2,180,000 single-use plastic products from landfills and oceans.

The first challenge will take place between July 1 and September 30, 2023.

He added, “Let us lead the way in sustainability and take action to safeguard our environment. Together, we can reverse the tide of plastic pollution and build a cleaner, healthier Nigeria”.
