Five children were rescued from the hands of two accused child traffickers in Auchi, Edo State, on Friday. When apprehended in Auchi, the unaccompanied minors were allegedly on their way from Kaduna to Onitsha, Anambra State.
The youngsters, all girls aged seven to nine, had arrived in Auchi from Kaduna in the evening and attempted to contact two suspected female traffickers to be sent to Onitsha.
As a result of the children’s hesitant and innocent disposition, several nosy co-passengers got suspicious.
According to a source, the five girls were underage. They tried contacting some people, and the other passengers became suspicious.
“With the help of the driver and his colleagues at Onitsha Park in Auchi, the women were called to come over and pick up the children.
“The two suspected traffickers who were later identified as Vera Okhakhu and Blessing Agbokha, claimed to be indigenes of Fugar, Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo State”.
According to reports, the two ladies were thoroughly questioned. They were then handed over to police officers at the Auchi Police Divisional Headquarters for further investigation.
Attempts to contact the Edo State Police spokesman, Chidi Nwanbuzor, were futile since he did not return calls or react to text messages given to him.
