According to his wife, Annemarie van Kesteren, Edwin van der Sar is currently in intensive care but is communicating and not in any immediate danger. Last Friday, Croatia hospitalized the former goalkeeper for Manchester United and the Netherlands due to bleeding in the brain.
While on vacation in Croatia, Van der Sar reportedly suffered a cerebral hemorrhage.
“Edwin is still in the intensive care unit but is stable,” Van Kesteren said in a statement issued by Ajax.
“Every time we get to visit him, he’s communicative,” she added.
“We have to wait patiently to see how his situation will develop. He is not in life-threatening danger.”
Van der Sar spent almost a decade playing for Ajax before transferring to Juventus in 1999 and later playing for Fulham and Manchester United.
He retired as a two-time Champions League winner, winning four Premier League and four Eredivisie titles.
Van der Sar played 130 games for the Netherlands and held the title of most-capped player for some time.
