In response to reports of violence, arson, and looting during the ongoing Egungun festival in Oyo state, the Olubadan of Ibadan, Moshood Olalekan Balogun, has taken the decision to suspend the festival. The annual masquerade celebration, held in Ibadan, was halted following incidents of unrest in the state capital.
Oladele Ogunsola, the personal media aide to the Olubadan, confirmed the suspension of the festival in a statement. The monarch expressed deep sadness over the acts of violence and called for an emergency meeting with all the leaders of the masquerades, known as ‘Alaagbaa’ in Ibadan. The meeting is scheduled to take place on July 17 at the historic Aliiwo palace in Agodi.
The statement issued by the Olubadan read:
Despite warnings and assurances received prior to the commencement of the festival, the reported incidents on Saturday surpassed previous occurrences, making them seem insignificant. I had expressed serious concerns about these events, but the reports I have received contradict the assurances given by the leaders of the masquerades.
No responsible leader can remain passive when the majority of their subjects are in distress and living in constant fear due to the actions of a few misguided individuals who refuse to abide by the law.
That is why the suspension clause is being invoked, and the duration will be determined based on the outcome of Monday’s meeting. I am committed to peace, and I have zero tolerance for anything that disrupts the well-being of my people.”
The Olubadan called upon security agencies to maintain peace and order during this period, emphasizing that anyone who violates the suspension order will be treated as a criminal.
