Manchester City’s Premier League campaign has suffered another blow as John Stones, the English defender, is set for an extended period on the sidelines due to a persistent muscle issue.
This setback follows closely on the heels of Kevin De Bruyne’s injury ordeal.
Stones, who has not yet participated in a competitive match this season, will be unable to contribute until after the upcoming international break in September. This means he will miss pivotal clashes including the Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine and a friendly fixture against Scotland.
The 29-year-old’s absence comes as a setback for City, as he has been a pivotal figure in their defensive setup. Stones had struggled with a muscle problem since the preseason and was unable to feature in key matches against Burnley, Newcastle, and the UEFA Super Cup victory against Sevilla.
City manager Pep Guardiola, who is already dealing with De Bruyne’s injury situation, emphasized the importance of a fully fit squad during this demanding period of fixtures. He expressed, “We will need everyone for this schedule and calendar. Stones will not be ready until after the international break.”
Stones’s absence raises concerns about Manchester City’s defensive depth, especially with the transfer window still open. Guardiola hinted that crucial decisions regarding squad reinforcements will need to be made by the club.
As fans eagerly await the next international break, scheduled from September 4 to 12, the injury-plagued City side must regroup and strategize for the challenges ahead, with the hope of finding solutions to their growing injury woes.
