Music Journalist Joey Akan Calls Out Spyro’s Criticism of Secular Music

A candid clash in the music industry emerges as music journalist Joey Akan calls out singer Spyro for his recent criticism of lyrics in secular music. The debate takes a turn as Joey uncovers a perceived hypocrisy in Spyro’s position, shedding light on his collaborations with secular artists and industry involvements that seemingly contrast with his faith-based commentary.

While speaking in a recent podcast, Spyro had criticised singer Shallipopi for lyrics to his songs, emphasizing the importance of creating impactful lyrics.

In reaction to this, Joey Akan condemns Sypro’s action describing it as sheer hypocrisy. Joey says,

This boy Spyro received his biggest ever song by working with worldly-adjacent artists. He chose Tiwa Savage for a collaboration over his faith-based colleagues. Chioma Jesus and Dunsin Onyekan lost out on “who’s your guy,” remix.

He’s also signed to a worldly label, performs at worldly events, including an upcoming activation for Trophy, an alcoholic brand that caters to nightlife and winebibers. But he never fails to ceaselessly attack his colleagues, their professional output, and their themes of escapism and realism.

Add that to a collaboration with DJ Neptune and Iyanya, two ‘worldly’ music stalwarts. He also will not grace his gospel podcasts, but try to harness numbers from a “worldly” podcast. Talking about how he hates the secular industry because he is “for Jesus.” While working in it, serving it, benefiting from it, and making a living out of it. I call hyprocrisy. Promoting Jesus, but dining in the lucrative altars of mammon.”

The clash intensifies as Joey Akan delves into the intricacies of Spyro’s simultaneous involvement in the secular music industry while critiquing its content.
