Former Premier League winner Danny Drinkwater, who was once part of Leicester City’s remarkable championship-winning team, has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 33.
Drinkwater’s career took a downturn after his move to Chelsea, where he struggled with injuries, making just 22 appearances and scoring one goal. He was subsequently loaned out to Aston Villa but left after a training ground altercation with teammate Jota. Further loan spells at Burnley, Reading, and the Turkish side Kasimpasa followed, but he was unable to secure a long-term deal.
Speaking about his retirement, Drinkwater explained, “It’s probably been a long time coming, especially with the last year, but I think it’s time to officially announce it now.” He also mentioned feeling “in limbo for too long” and not getting the opportunities to play at a level where he felt valued.
During his peak, Drinkwater was a crucial part of Leicester’s 2015–16 Premier League title-winning campaign. However, his career trajectory shifted, and he was left out of the England national team for the 2016 European Championship.
Drinkwater’s future plans post-retirement have not been disclosed, but he did reveal that he approached Leicester about a potential return.
The announcement marks the end of a career that began when he was just six or seven years old and reflects the challenges and transitions faced by professional athletes as they navigate the later stages of their careers.
