Luis Manuel Diaz, father of Liverpool forward Luis Diaz, has been freed by the National Liberation Army (ELN) after nearly two weeks in captivity. The release was orchestrated by a humanitarian commission comprising the United Nations, the Catholic Church, the Ombudsman’s Office, and the Red Cross. Diaz senior is expected to be reunited with his family in La Guajira shortly.
The Episcopal Conference of Colombia shared a post on social media expressing gratitude for Mr. Luis Diaz’s release, alongside an image of him after regaining freedom. The humanitarian commission, led by Mons. Francisco Ceballos and Mons. Hector Henao, played a crucial role in facilitating the release.
Luis Diaz, who recently marked his return to the pitch with a goal against Luton Town, had endured a challenging period as his father’s abduction unfolded. Despite the ordeal, he continues to showcase resilience, emphasizing the importance of family with a poignant message displayed during his goal celebration: “Freedom for papa.”
With this incident behind them, Liverpool and Diaz can now focus on upcoming fixtures, including a Premier League clash against Brentford and a CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifier between Colombia and Brazil.
