Rebecca Welch is set to make history this weekend as the first female referee to officiate a Premier League match, taking charge of the clash between Fulham and Burnley. The 39-year-old, a former player who qualified as an official through the Durham County FA, has been a trailblazer in her career, previously becoming the first woman to act as a fourth official in the Premier League during Fulham’s fixture against Manchester United earlier this season.

Welch’s groundbreaking achievements extend beyond the Premier League, as she previously officiated an EFL match, taking control of a League Two clash between Harrogate and Port Vale in April 2021. Her journey into officiating began at the age of 27 after encouragement from a friend, and she has since become a regular fixture in the Women’s Super League.

Having officiated in men’s Championship matches and even being part of the officiating team at the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Welch’s appointment for the Fulham vs. Burnley game is a significant milestone for gender equality in sports officiating. Burnley manager Vincent Kompany praised the achievement, noting its importance in inspiring others to pursue their goals within the game. Welch’s historic Premier League debut as a referee is not only a personal milestone but also a significant step forward for women in football.
