Bayer Leverkusen, the current leaders in the Bundesliga, have provided an encouraging update on the surgery undergone by Nigerian forward Victor Boniface. The player, who sustained a muscle tendon injury in the right adductor area during a training camp in Dubai, will unfortunately miss the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Following his immediate departure from the national team’s camp, Boniface underwent successful surgery in Berlin, as officially announced by Bayer Leverkusen on their social media account. The 23-year-old, a pivotal figure in Leverkusen’s ascent to the top of the Bundesliga table, is set to begin rehabilitation in April after a three-month recovery period.

Despite the setback, Boniface’s absence will be felt in both club and country competitions, with him missing a total of 18 games. The top scorer for Bayer Leverkusen with ten goals in 16 appearances, Boniface was anticipated to be a standout performer in the 2023 AFCON before his unfortunate injury.

In his absence, OGC Nice striker Terem Moffi has been called up by Nigeria as they strive for their first continental triumph in a decade. The Super Eagles remain focused on their AFCON campaign despite the setback, and Boniface is expected to make a full recovery to rejoin his team in the coming months.

This update marks a challenging period for both Victor Boniface and Bayer Leverkusen, as they navigate through the player’s rehabilitation process and aim to maintain their impressive form in the Bundesliga.
