In a remarkable display of dedication, Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana embarked on a whirlwind journey from the pitch at Old Trafford to the skies, boarding a private jet bound for Cameroon’s AFCON opener just hours after the Red Devils’ intense clash with Tottenham Hotspur.
Following the 2-2 draw against Spurs, Onana, undeterred by fatigue, shared a snapshot on Snapchat from his private jet, showcasing his commitment to both club and country. The goalkeeper had previously announced his availability for the Premier League clash against Spurs and promptly confirmed his intention to participate in Cameroon’s AFCON opener against Guinea, scheduled a mere 23 hours after the conclusion of the Premier League fixture.
Despite his rapid turnaround, Onana is expected to sit out Cameroon’s Group C match against Guinea in Yamoussoukro, as reported by The Daily Mail. Having spent seven hours in transit from Manchester, his distant cousin Fabrice Ondoa, currently playing for Nimes in the French third tier, is anticipated to step into the goalkeeper’s position. Rigobert Song, the former West Ham and Liverpool star, coaches the Cameroon squad, which is set to face Guinea, Senegal, and Gambia in the group stage.
While there is a possibility that Onana may not miss any matches for Manchester United if Cameroon fails to advance beyond the group stages, the scenario changes if Cameroon progresses. If they make it to the final, Onana could potentially miss four games for the Red Devils, including the fourth round of the FA Cup on January 28.
Although Onana will not feature in Cameroon’s opening match against Guinea on Wednesday, there is a high likelihood that he will be a key figure when they face Senegal on January 19. The goalkeeper’s commitment to both club and country reflects his determination to contribute on all fronts.
