Annalena Baerbock, Germany’s Foreign Minister, has urged that Israel transfer sovereignty of the Gaza Strip following the battle with Hamas.
She argued that Palestinians should be in charge, free of terror, self-sufficient, and with a freely elected government, including in the West Bank.
Baerbock emphasised that constructing infrastructure, reforming the Palestinian Authority, economic restoration, and establishing a security framework that included security guarantees for both Palestine and Israel would help keep the two-state solution within reach.
She went on to say that only a two-state solution could provide long-term peace and security for the Israeli people.
When asked who should be in charge after the conflict, Baerbock responded on Friday, as quoted by NAN:
“That the Palestinians, free from Hamas, free from terror, self-determined and with a freely elected government of all Palestinians, including in the West Bank, should be in charge.
“This will not happen overnight, she said but we must not lose sight of the political horizon, especially now, during the war.”
