Adekunle Gold faces online harassment after disclosing his struggle with sickle cell disease.
The Nigerian musician shared his experience during a recent CNN interview, revealing that he faced criticism and mistreatment on social media platforms following his open discussion about his health condition.
I want people living with sickle cell to feel safe, to feel like they have help and support,” Gold said. He recounted receiving abusive tweets after speaking about his struggle in his song ‘5-star.’ “They call you a sickler,” he noted, highlighting the stigma associated with the disease.
Gold, known for hits like ‘Orente,’ disclosed that he has been aware of his diagnosis since childhood. Despite being warned against certain activities due to his condition, his rebellious nature often led him to participate in them, resulting in frequent hospital visits.
I’ve known about my sickle cell disease all my life. I knew since I was a child that I couldn’t do certain things,” he explained.
By sharing his story, Gold aims to raise awareness and encourage others with sickle cell disease to speak out.
I just got the courage to come out and speak up openly about it. A lot of people can’t share their stories like I can,” he said, emphasizing the importance of visibility and support for those living with the disease.
