The Senate today, has requested that the Federal Government, along with other pertinent authorities, immediately establish the appropriate frameworks to deal with construction-related errors and prosecute anybody found to have broken established protocols.
Adopting a motion on the recent building collapse in Jos that resulted in the deaths of twenty-two students, the Senate expressed regret over the sad sight of healthy, active children returning home as corpses after having left to take exams. The motion was introduced by Senator Dikwet Plang (PDP, Plateau North).
In his seconding of the motion, Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) stated that there are now too many tragedies in Jos North.
He stated it hurt to send a child to school and then for those parents to receive word that their child had passed away.
According to him:
“This ugly incidence of building collapse has been a recurring decimal in Nigeria as a result of poor workmanship, substandard building materials and constructional standards leading to the wanton destruction of precious lives and various properties valued at hundreds of millions of naira.”
The Senate observed that in spite of these instances, no significant disciplinary actions against defaulters were ever taken as a consequence of the study and inquiry to pinpoint the subpar and unprofessional performance.
