In the wake of the tragic murder of Christiana Idowu, a student from Ogun State University, Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has issued a powerful call to men, urging them to confront and challenge abusive behaviors among their peers.
Christiana, who was abducted on August 19, 2024, while on industrial training along the Ikorodu-Yaba road, Lagos State, was tragically killed despite a ransom being paid. The kidnappers initially demanded N3 million but accepted N350,000 before refusing to release her.
In response to this horrifying incident, Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold took to Twitter (now known as X) to address men directly. He emphasized that true strength is demonstrated not by silence, but by actively standing against friends who engage in abusive, rapist, or demeaning behaviour towards women.
Adekunle Gold’s message read: “Men, true strength is not about staying silent but about standing up to your friends who abuse, rape, or demean women. Let’s redefine masculinity by holding each other accountable. #JusticeforChristianah.”
His statement has resonated widely, earning praise from many on social media. Comments include:
– Noizy_entertainment: “Well said. It’s so scary out here.”
– Kertz_Kelvin: “Take it as a responsibility to confront and caution any friend if you see or hear him bragging about misogynist acts, attitude, or rants.”
– Billion_dollarbabyy: “Bro just spat facts.”
– Lovelyn.Andrew: “If you know anyone who abused a woman and you keep quiet, you are also guilty.”
– _Oyiza: “This is a real man here. He spoke facts.”
– Adekunle Crystal: “True words.”
– Racheal: “This right here.”
– Debbie Chris: “God bless you for this.”
– Gbemisola CFC: “You have spoken well; we should stop being enablers by keeping quiet.”
In addition to Adekunle Gold’s call for accountability, singer Ayra Starr has also spoken out in support of better treatment for women and justice for the victim. The incident follows previous tragedies, including the case of two best friends who went missing in April 2024 and were later found deceased near the home of someone they met online.
