Nollywood star Mercy Johnson Okojie, known for her roles in film, is now at the center of controversy after actively campaigning for Senator Monday Okpebholo in the upcoming Edo State gubernatorial election.
As the wife of a politician in Edo State, Johnson took part in a political rally in Ward 6 Irruekpen, Esan West LGA, where she urged women to encourage their families to vote for Okpebholo, a candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A video capturing her rally speech has since gone viral on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), with the actress being heavily criticized by many Nigerians online. Her participation in the campaign has sparked outrage, with several accusing her of using her fame for political gain.
One commenter, Linzkits, criticized the actress: “If you all like follow Mercy Johnson campaign oo. You all should know that she has cashed out.”
Another, Amfani_Shadrach, went further, writing: “E no go better for this ashawo. God punish you there.”
While some referred to her husband’s political connections, others, like Chris, declared boycotts of her future projects, stating: “From today, any movie, advert, commercial or endorsement that features Mercy Johnson, me and my family will not patronize.”
Many see her campaign efforts as supporting an unqualified candidate, with comments like: “Mercy Johnson is using her fame to drag many people to vote for APC,” and Edeh added, “That’s how the devil operates, half-truths.”
Despite the backlash, Johnson has remained silent, leaving the debate to continue among her fans and critics.
