Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham has responded strongly to a fan of her colleague and former rival, Funke Akindele, for belittling her hard work.
Toyin, who is preparing for the release of her latest cinema movie set to debut in December, shared a throwback photo from her photoshoot for the crew of Ijakumo and teased another upcoming project. A follower, however, compared it to Funke Akindele’s work and questioned why she appears to follow in Funke’s footsteps, saying,
Must you copy Aunty Funke Akindele in everything? Chai.”
In response, Toyin expressed her frustration with the ongoing comparisons and the constant downplaying of her efforts, replying:
Please check my recent post because I’m tired of you all saying this about my hard work.”
In a since-deleted Instagram post, Toyin reiterated that she is tired of the negativity, emphasizing how she consistently celebrates her crew and works hard to produce quality projects. She pleaded with fans to stop demeaning her achievements, stating:
Ijakumo crew photoshoot 2022. 2024, get ready for the Alakadabadandboujee crew. Throwback. I’m tired of some of you putting down my hard work. I work so hard. I celebrate my crew every time, please stop talking down on my efforts. No negativity. Read, don’t talk.”
It’s no secret that Toyin Abraham and Funke Akindele have had a long-standing rivalry in Nollywood, as both actresses have dominated the industry for years. However, they appeared to mend fences last year when Toyin publicly wished Funke a happy birthday, with Funke reciprocating. Toyin also attended Funke’s movie premiere, further dismissing rumors of animosity between the two box office queens.
Earlier this year, Toyin penned an open letter to Funke, acknowledging that fan wars had unnecessarily fueled their feud and congratulating her on achieving a cinema milestone. Funke graciously responded, wishing Toyin the best.
Nevertheless, some speculated about a renewed movie rivalry after Toyin teased her latest project, a sequel to her popular Alakada series, scheduled for release in December. This announcement came just a week after Funke revealed that she was working on a sequel to her hit film Jenifa, which led some fans to draw comparisons between the two actresses.
Despite the chatter, Toyin later shared a cryptic post about imperfection and growth, suggesting that everyone makes mistakes but learns, grows, and moves on.
