Rivers State Government has launched a judicial probe into the arson, deaths, and other acts of violence that happened in the state on Monday.
The move came after the Ikwerre, Eleme, and Emohua local government council secretariats were set on fire after the Commissioner of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, withdrew the police personnel responsible for protecting the 23 council secretariats.
Following the assaults, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara pledged to take serious action against those responsible for burning down three local government secretariats.
He assured that, unlike prior incidents, his government will work with security authorities to find and punish the offenders responsible.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by the Office of the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, the judicial committee was formed in accordance with Section 2(1) of the Commissions of Inquiry Law, Cap 30, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999.
The statement reads:
“His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, Governor of Rivers State, has approved the setting up of a Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the arson, killings, and wanton destruction of property at some local government council headquarters which occurred on or about Monday, October 7, 2024.”
Barrister Felicia Nwoke, Professor Blessing Didia, Sir Samuel Egbe, Venerable Alex Usifor, Barrister Uzor Ikenga, and Mrs Inyingi Brown serve as secretaries, while Hon Justice I.R. Minakiri serves as chairman.
The panel members have already been sworn in at Government House’s Executive Council Chambers in Port Harcourt.
