Hundreds of Nigerian youths risked their lives by enthusiastically scooping petrol off a fallen tanker.
The event occurred at around 4 p.m. at Okurikang Junction in Odukpani LGA, Cross River.
The vehicle collapsed as a consequence of a severe downpour that made the Calabar-Itu federal route slick, while the road’s restoration is progressing at a snail’s pace.
According to onlookers, the fallen tanker was on its way from the Calabar depot to deliver its merchandise to Akwa Ibom State or one of the eastern states.
The truck had no plate numbers, and the driver was believed to have narrowly avoided death and was sent to a local hospital.
One of the boys, identified as Ikpeme James, stated that his fellow Okada riders had to park a long distance away before they could serve themselves with petrol.
He said:
“We have cautioned ourselves that nobody should ignite any iron, switch on their phones, hold matches or slam anything that could spark fires.”
Some Okada riders and even townspeople were observed in the drizzling rain jumping into the wrecked truck to grab the merchandise, despite the inherent dangers.
There was an increase in automobile activity, including other trucks carrying petroleum products, near the site.
There were no FRSC officials or police officers nearby.
