In order to avoid an impending strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Federal Government has re-formed a seven-member renegotiation committee to resolve 2009 agreements with university-based unions.
At the committee’s inauguration in Abuja on Monday, Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman set a three-month timeline for discussions.
According to NAN, the group includes officials from ASUU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, or SSANU.
Others include the Non-Academic Staff of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
According to Mamman, President Bola Tinubu’s government aims to strengthen the school system while also maintaining campus calm.
He stated that renegotiations began in 2017, but were postponed owing to unexpected circumstances.
He said that the previous committee, chaired by Prof. Nimi Briggs, created a draft report that included major topics.
The minister asked the reconstituted group to work carefully and create realistic agreements to solve the difficulties confronting the Nigerian University System (NUS).
Dr Yayale Ahmed, Committee Chairman, urged the government to assist universities in reaching global competitiveness and to see academics’ salaries as investments.
ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke congratulated the government and expressed optimism that the new committee would succeed where previous ones had failed.
He highlighted the unions’ willingness to bargain if the government worked toward a solid academic calendar.
