Enugu: We’re not in military era – NUJ condemns EFCC invasion of radio station

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for raiding a radio station in Enugu State.

On Monday evening, the EFCC invaded Urban 94.5FM, disrupting a live broadcast and taking a presenter, Favour Ekoh, with them.

The radio station’s crew was allegedly made to sit on the floor during the invasion, and some of its transmitting equipment was tampered with.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Comrade Sam Udekwe, chairman of the NUJ, Enugu Council, condemned the Commission’s actions, stating that this is not a military era.

Udekwe regarded the behaviour as unprofessional, regardless of the probe’s gravity.

He said:

“It is only in times of military seizure of power that we experience such an act of forceful disruption of broadcast transmission of this kind. No matter what offence, it’s the individual that may have committed it as alleged and should be gone after in a due process and not extending it to public facilities like radio on air.”

While calling for a thorough inquiry into the situation to determine whether persons on official duty indeed carried it out, the NUJ Chairman requested that the EFCC apologise to the radio station and the general public for the humiliation and unethical behaviour.

According to him, it has become a regular trend for men in uniform to inflict various degrees of intimidation on media workers with no repercussions at the end of the day, and he has called for an end to government negligence.
