Regionalism architect of Nigeria’s problems – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo affirms that the concept of regionalism will continue to afflict the country, citing it as the source of Nigeria’s issues.

Obasanjo revealed this on Tuesday in Abeokuta when the League of Northern Democrats paid him a courtesy call.

He stated that the idea of regionalism, which was established upon Nigeria’s independence in 1960, is being sought for today.

Speaking to the delegation led by former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, the ex-president stated that where a leader comes from is less important than what he brings to the table in terms of development and administration.

Obasanjo, who criticized the group’s name, recommended it to become a national league rather than a sectarian group, stating that the group was correct to be worried about Nigeria.

Obasanjo said:

“One of the things that led us to where we are today, and we haven’t gotten out of, is regionalism.

“Whenever I hear ‘North,’ ‘East,’ or ‘West,’ I get frightened.

“Your name would have been ‘National League of Democrats’ instead of ‘Northern League of Democrats.’ But you must start somewhere.”
