Nigerian singer Kingsley Okonkwo, popularly known as KCee, has responded to recent criticism from fellow artist Harrysong, following accusations of copying Flavour’s style in his latest music release.
A few days back, Kemi Filani reported that Flavour threw shade at KCee, accusing him of copying his work. Though he didn’t directly name KCee, it was clear whom he was addressing.
According to social media commentator Maria Use Nwachi, Flavour allegedly took issue with KCee and his brother, E-Money, over a recent collaboration. Nwachi explained that after Flavour and Phyno recorded a song with Theresa Onuoha, KCee supposedly rushed to collaborate with her as well, aiming to release it before their track.
Another online claim suggested that KCee frequently samples Flavour’s music.
On Monday night, KCee addressed these accusations directly, urging Flavour to stop “gatekeeping” Igbo culture, reminding him that the genre belongs to all and that he himself has been in the industry long before Flavour. KCee emphasized that his music honors his heritage, and he won’t apologize for his success.
KCee’s heated response continued with:
“I’ve come too far for anyone to downplay my sweat and hard work. Stop trying to gatekeep Igbo culture. You’re not a custodian. My music celebrates our heritage, and I won’t apologize. Get that right.”
In his concluding remarks, he cautioned:
“BRO!!!!!! We are not on the same level. Pick your battles carefully.”
This isn’t the first time KCee has faced accusations of copying. Earlier this year, a fan from Olamide’s YBNL label called him out for sampling “Amapiano” by Olamide and Asake, highlighting Olamide’s influence on the Igbo music scene.
