Nollywood Veteran Pa Charles Olumo Sanyaolu (Agbako) Passes Away at 101

Nollywood is mourning the loss of veteran actor Pa Charles Olumo Sanyaolu, affectionately known as Agbako, who passed away at the age of 101.

The Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) announced his passing via the Instagram page of its president, Bolaji Amusan, widely known as Mr. Latin.

Mr. Latin expressed the group’s sadness, writing, “Announcing the passing of Pa Charles Olumo Sanyaolu, fondly known as Agbako. Details of the burial arrangements will be shared at a later time. Good night, father. 25/02/1923 to 31/10/2024.” Following the announcement, tributes poured in as fans and colleagues remembered Agbako’s impact on Nigerian cinema.

Esteemed Nollywood figures such as Jide Kosoko and Kunle Afod penned heartfelt messages. Afod wrote, “Good night, Pa Charles Olumo (Baba Agbako), the oldest actor, 101 years. Sun re ooo.” Kosoko added, “Good night, Baba Charles, a.k.a Agbako. R.I.P.”

In February 2023, Nollywood stars gathered in Abeokuta to celebrate Agbako’s 100th birthday. The star-studded event featured actors like Toyosi Adesanya, Odunlade Adekola, Lere Paimo, and Mr. Latin, as well as members of TAMPAN, who honored Agbako’s contributions to Nollywood. Actor Muyiwa Ademola also called on the Guinness World Records to recognize Agbako as the oldest and most active Nigerian actor.

Agbako’s legacy will be remembered fondly, with his contributions deeply rooted in the hearts of his fans and colleagues. His dedication to Nigerian film has left an indelible mark on Nollywood.
