In October 2024, a total of 971 Nigerians have experienced kidnapping across the country.
The discovery comes as a new terror organization, ‘Lakurawa’, emerges in the country’s northeastern region.
The information is featured in the ‘October 2024 Nigeria Security Report’ by Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited (BSIL), a security risk management and intelligence consultancy firm, which was made accessible to newsmen on Tuesday.
According to the analysis, security indicators such as incidents, abductions, and deaths are deteriorating in the country, and the mounting statistics imply that 2024 will be the worst year for security performance in roughly a decade.
It outlined that the month under review was primarily marked by developments associated with violent activities, such as killings and kidnappings for ransom by non-state armed groups (NSAGs), criminal gangs, cult groups, and armed ethnic militias, as well as social unrest in the form of protests and labour action sparked by the country’s harsh socioeconomic circumstances and political activities.
The security firm disclosed that data collected suggested that the country had a 51% spike in deaths and a 24.42% increase in abductions.
According to BEACON INTEL, Nigeria registered 861 security occurrences between October 1 and 31, 2024, of which 64.92% (559) were ascribed to security threats, 24.79% (215) to security forces activities, and 4.99% (43) to safety incidents.
In the month under review, the country also recorded 1545 fatalities, with 67.70% ascribed to civilian deaths, 25.89% to criminals/non-state armed groups (NSAGs), and 6.40% to security forces, as well as 971 Nigerians kidnapped.
