Nollywood actress Sarah Martins has sparked controversy after accusing a resident in her estate of assisting her housemaid in absconding with her belongings, including $10,000 in cash.
In a now-deleted Instagram post, Sarah shared a video showing the estate resident reviewing CCTV footage of the incident. According to the actress, the man allegedly provided his access card to her maid, facilitating her escape.
Sarah explained that a visit to the estate control room revealed footage of the man aiding the housemaid. She further alleged that the man, a married individual, had been on friendly terms with the maid for a while.
In her post, she questioned whether to hold the resident accountable for the theft:
“This estate resident used his access card to give access to my house girl, who ran away this morning with my belongings, including $10,000 cash.
We had to go to the estate control room to check the CCTV footage, and that’s how we saw how he helped her escape. The girl is nowhere to be found. Should I hold this man accountable for all the damages?
Mind you, he’s a married man, and my staff just confirmed to me that he’s been friends with my help for a long time. I want to use him as a scapegoat so next time he sees people’s house girls, he will stay away from them and focus on his wife and family.”
Sarah’s ordeal is the latest in a series of theft incidents involving domestic staff in Nigeria’s entertainment and celebrity circles.
- Alesh Sanni: In December 2023, actor Alesh Sanni accused his cleaner of stealing N3.2 million and valuables, including gold jewelry, after providing him with shelter and clothing.
- Ruth Kadiri: The actress narrowly avoided losing her Range Rover Autobiography to a staff member but recovered it with assistance from friends.
- Carol King: The veteran actress recounted losing $700 and €40 after a maid failed to return to work. A subsequent search of her home revealed other stolen possessions.
- Tolu Bally: The celebrity fashion designer returned from church to discover her chef had stolen her jewelry and other valuables.
- Ehi Ogbebor: The ex-girlfriend of MC Oluomo revealed that her maid hacked into her safe and stole $11,000 (around N8 million).
Sarah Martins’ case has raised questions about accountability and the growing mistrust between employers and domestic staff. Many social media users have called for caution in hiring household workers and emphasized the importance of stricter vetting processes.
Meanwhile, the role of the estate resident remains a point of contention. Whether he will face legal action or be held accountable for his alleged involvement remains to be seen.
